GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is entry-level, manual labor performing physical maintenance and operation of specialized equipment for the construction of water/wastewater facilities and systems. Works under the general supervision of the Distribution / Collection Crew Leader.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with all phases of construction, maintenance and repair of water/wastewater systems as required to ensure system reliability. Must work in conjunction with other workers.
- Assists in stocking trucks with necessary parts for daily work orders.
- Operates and assists in maintaining heavy construction equipment used in the water/wastewater construction as designated by a supervisor.
- Performs safety and maintenance checklist on City vehicles and reports deficiencies.
- Assists with the installation and maintenance of water/wastewater equipment such as backflow devices, fire hydrants, meter systems, valves and other associated equipment.
- Assists with maintaining wastewater pump stations, control panels, and generators.
- Operates and assists with the set-up of various water/wastewater equipment.
- Assists physically and technically in water/wastewater construction projects using concrete, bricks, and advanced technologies such as slip lining, pipe bursting, pipe jacking and other construction related activities.
- Assists in the selection, use and placement of traffic control and job site protection systems including non-entry rescue equipment, trench safety devices, ventilation systems, and materials handling equipment.
- Assists with heavy manual labor on water/wastewater systems.
- Performs general cleaning and cleanup in keeping work area neat and orderly.
- Enters data into the computer, as needed.
- Assists with pipe joining, pipe fitting, and fire hydrant meter and backflow devices.
- May be required to transport, mix, handle or use hazardous materials or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current, fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and one (1) year of related experience.
- A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- Valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with Airbrake Endorsement (or obtain with six months of employment).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) rules and regulations on operation of construction equipment on roadways.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
- Familiar with operation of assigned equipment.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.
- Ability to work unscheduled and emergency overtime.
- Must meet safety training established for position.
