GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is entry level work going through a training program in water pollution control facilities, leading to certification by the State of Florida as a Certified Operator and the direction of the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the supervision of a certified operator, the apprentice performs work
sassociated with the wastewater treatment plant lift stations and collection systems assigned. - On-the-job training includes learning laboratory procedures, the nature of tools, industrial machines and equipment at the wastewater plant.
- Assists with installation of new sewer service lines.
- Performs routine maintenance work as assigned.
- Performs general maintenance and labor work such as mowing, digging, cleaning, and laying pipe.
- Works on-call on a rotation basis on weekends and nights.
- Maintains records and reports.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or GED.
- A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- Must obtain Class “C” certificate within two (2) years of employment.
- Florida CDL License preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of tools and their use.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical computations.
- Ability and aptitude to learn complicated laboratory procedures.
- Ability to work, learn and progress in a career-type position.
- Must possess a good physical condition and sound mental alertness.
- Ability to learn methods and practices of modern wastewater treatment standards and normal operating procedures applicable to treatment.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Works inside.
- Works outside in various weather conditions with: noise, chemicals, electrical energy or radiant energy, odors. Slippery surfaces.
- Uneven surfaces.
- Vibrations.
- Heights up to 15 feet.
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.

- Ability to learn the functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment.
- Ability to learn to read meters and charts accurately; to maintain simple records of shift operations; perform simple chemical analyzes accurately.
